We visited two sections of the Great Wall of China. The underlying architecture dates from the Ming dynasty, the original plan for the Great Wall dates back to the Qin Dynasty (221-207 B.C). We were priveleged to see the less visited areas and enjoy the tranquility. The view is breath taking especially when the mist rolls in from the mountains adding to the mystique.
Our journey in Beijing started with a visit to the Temple of the Sun park. We later visited Tiananmen square, the Forbidden city and the Temple of Heaven. Our group was given a special tour of the accomadations the emperor had built for his mother. The luxurious rooms included a private theatre. We took a tour of the hutong by pedicab and were invited for tea by one of the residents. His wife was happy to have us in the kitchen and we watched as she prepared traditional dumplings. We had many enomous feasts including the area specialties Peking Duck and "hot-pot". After enjoying a traditional tea ceremony, we wandered through the many markets. One of the most interesting is the "night market" where deep fried scorpions and other unusual items are sold.
