Giant Tortoises, which can weigh up to 600 pounds, can only be found in the Galapagos Islands and one Island in the Indian Ocean. During the 1800s, whalers would easily catch the tortoises and stack them upside down in their ship's hold. Tortoises can live several months without food or water and provided fresh meat for the crew. Over 200,000 were eaten and many species became extinct. The Charles Darwin Research Station has made fantastic progress in saving the Giant Tortoise population. However, it is doubtful that the population will ever fully recover.

Marine Iguanas love to bask in the sun. They are the only Iguanas which can swim. Their primary food in sea algae. While snorkeling, I watched a Marine Iguana eating algae. It sounds like two rocks grinding together.

Sally light foot crabs can be found on any rocky shore line. Their striking colors make them a great picture.
