Venice is Neptune's portico risen from the deep...but for how long?Venezia, La Serenissima, Queen of the Adriatic, a city of canals and palaces.Venice's nature is dual: water and land, long history and doubtful future. If this precious place does sink, the world will be the poorer. We spent three short days in Venice visiting St. Marks Basilica, the Doges Palace, The Bridge of Sighs and the frightening ancient prision. Venice is simply a wonder. You can look directly at your destination, but unless you want to swim, ready yourself to wander alleys looking for the proper sequence of bridges like a puzzle. Walking through the city and stopping at the outdoor cafes is an activity in itself, especially at night when St. Marks Square comes alive with violinists playing by candlelight.
