An early morning flight takes us to the ancient capital of Xian to see the famed Terracotta Army. The army was made to guard the tomb of Qinshihuang, the first emperor to unite China. The actual tomb of the emperor has not been excavated. Legend says a river of mercury runs through his tomb. The archeological discovery consists of nearly 10,000 terracotta figures of warriors and their horses. Each figure is has differing features and facial expressions. The figures are represented in natural positions. In one segment, the high ranking warriors, can be found positioned to recieve an important guest as opposed to other area's where the positioning is defensive in nature. A few of the warriors retain some of the original paint and two chariots were discovered. The majority of the figures were broken in an attempt to breach the tomb. Most have been meticulously reconstructed. Restoration is ongoing on this enormous project.
